TUESDAY, May 17 (Health Canada) -- The Toronto-based drugmaker will begin selling an online prescription drug discount card for $1 per tablet, according to a filing in the Canadian International Pharmacy Association’s Annual Report on June 28. The card, offered by Health Canada, will help reduce costs by up to $7 per prescription.

“The online card will allow patients to use Health Canada’s discounted drug discount card,” the association’s board-certified card, said in the filing. “The card will provide patients with a chance to compare prices for generic Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, and other prescription drugs at Health Canada’s pharmacy and be able to purchase the discount for eligible patients.”

The card, issued by Health Canada, will provide eligible patients with a discount of $5 per tablet and will offer a $10 savings card for eligible patients, said the card, which is part of a health plan covering prescription drugs.

Tad C. O’Brien, senior vice president of marketing for Health Canada’s Health Canada Health Benefit Card, said the card “will help patients lower their medication costs, improve the cost of medical devices, and increase the availability of drugs that are medically necessary.”

“A patient may be able to use a card in their home and not have to travel to a drugstore or other drugstore to get a prescription,” he said. “It’s a win-win for those who may benefit from the card.”

The card will also help reduce the cost of Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra from $5 to $10 per tablet, O’Brien said. The card is valid for six months from its issuance, said the card. The card is not covered by the health plan’s coverage of prescription medications, O’Brien added.

The card is not covered by Health Canada’s coverage of prescription drugs. Health Canada is also seeking the card from the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, which is the largest provider of prescription drug discount cards in Canada.
